Ignorance Is Still Bliss!

I've stated it before and I'm stating it again: RACISM STILL EXISTS. Have we made progress? Of course, but not enough. This is evident is the protests against President Obama the government. It's sad that people can walk around with degrading signs of the current President and they are grouped as simply "a few crazy people." Huh? If I recall correctly, when Bush was in office anything said against him was wrong and people were seen as unpatriotic and/or anti-United States. What's the difference now? Why aren't certain people, *cough*Republicans/Conservatives/some Independents*cough*, saying how disrespectful it is now?
.........Oh I know because these people are merely expressing their opposing viewpoints, right? WRONG. Most of these people are racist. You know it, I know, and I'm sure they know it. Just call it what it is because this whole "they just disagree with his political viewpoints" is nonsense. They see an intelligent black man and it scares them because it's new and it's different. Privileged people don't have a problem when another privileged person is in charge and is changing things, but once a person from the minority group takes control and begins to change things, there's a problem. We need to address it instead of trying to downplay it. I'm not saying that every opposing viewpoint stems from racism becasue I don't agree with President Obama all of the time either, but much of it is. As long as we keep pushing it to the side and sweeping it under the rug nothing will ever get solved, period.

Moving on, outside of government, we need to start actually listening to each other, especially when it comes to racial issues. In my diversity class for psychology, we watched a documentary about a small group of diverse people (5 people of color and 4 whites) coming together and speaking their truths. The Latino and one of the White men got into a heated discussion; the Latino man stopped and asked the White man if he(the White man) could repeat what he(the Latino man) just said, the White man couldn't do it because he wasn't listening, he was just hearing. We are so consumed with our own thoughts and getting our own points across that we miss out on the importance of what another person is saying to us. People of color have been trying to explain the hurt and the pain of living in a world of oppression for years, but too many white people aren't listening, they hear us, but they're not listening to meaning of our words. And when they hear us, they want to flip it, push it right back on us, and then try to explain to us why we feel a certain way. How does that help anything? A Black woman--from the documentary--discussed the importance of simply sitting with someone and letting them experience their emotions and feeling it with them because at the end of the day we don't need you to explain why we're feeling a certain way, we know why...YOU DON'T. Try living outside of yourself for a minute and think about how we must feel when we try to state our truth and all you can tell us is to "stop complaining" or try to come up with some erroneous explanation as to how it's our fault we get treated this way. PAUSE. It is 2009 and we are still trying to get our point across, obviously we have some serious issues that aren't our fault.

Will we ever live in a world free of racism? Not as long as people continue to close their eyes to blatant acts of it. Not as long as people continue to say nothing. Not as long as we remain entangled in our own selfish thoughts and feelings. If we can begin to listen to the true meaning and emotions behind words, then there's a chance. If we can learn to stand up to ignorance, then there's a chance. If we can finally understand that at the end of the day we are all human beings and deserve respect for that simple fact, then maybe. But right now, is seems like too many people are enjoying their blissful ignorance for anything to really change in a significant manner.

Racism is still a big deal. It's a reality and we have to do something about it.

Can We Do Better Please?

A young man by the name of Derrion Albert was killed...beaten to death by gang members. I won't go into detail because it sickens me and because you can find it all over the internet. I do have questions though:
Why are our young black men so angry with each other? Why is it so easy to beat someone to death and just walk away? Why has gang violence been an issue for so long? Why do I feel like nothing is changing?

It pisses me off because I feel like we, as a society, aren't taking the necessary steps to stop this type of hatred. We aren't encouraging the younger kids to do and be better. It seems like all they know is pain, and I can understand that...I might not know their exact pain, but I know pain, pain that lingers in your soul, pain that just doesn't go away, damn near suicidal pain, I've been there....but I knew there was more out there for me; it seems like they don't know that. It seems like they're hurt so much that they don't care about life anymore, and that, that should hurt us. I can't even place blame on anyone for something like this, because I blame us all. Are we failing our youth, our teenagers? Are we not setting our expectations high enough? I know we're not. We can't be bringing our "A" game because if we were stuff like this could not and would not happen. We have to do better because I'm tired of hearing about what colors you can/can't wear in a certain places; I'm tired of hearing about who's block this is and who's got that block; I'm tired of hearing about how the white people don't treat us right when we don't treat ourselves right. It doesn't make sense...it never did and it never will.

We have to learn how to support each other because if we don't no one else will. Instead of throwing up your fist every time someone looks at you wrong, try shaking someone's hand, try being friendly, try smiling. We have to look in the mirror and own whatever reflection we see; if we don't like that reflection, it's up to us to change it and make it better. There is no need to be so angry that we feel the need to tear each other down. Life is priceless. Even when it seems like the world is against you, Thank God that you have a life to live!

Keep Derrion's family in your thoughts and prayers.

Blame vs. Personal Responsibility

I was watching The Frank and Wanda Show and an interesting discussion came up. Frank recieved a letter from a young man in his early 20s discussing how he dropped out of high school and now he can't find a job. He's stressed, he's mad, blah, blah, blah...he wants to sue his parents. PAUSE! How does that work? lol. He wants to sue his parents because they didn't give him what he needed to finish school. Like self-motivation and responsibility I guess??? Anyway, Frank surprised me becuase he kind of agreed with the young man...he was saying something like parents have a responsibility to the child. My question is, at what point does a person have to take responsibility for themselves? At the age of 16 you can make the decision to quit school, and at that point, life truly becomes your own, right? I think so.

Very funny show. Watch it. That is all.

Who's Real

I like the fact that Ruff Ryders got back together to jump on the remix...which is BANANAS...but this video is just eh whatever. Anywho, you can get the song here.

#1

In case you are living under a rock, Mr. Z, as I like to never call him lol, has the number 1 spot selling 476,000 albums. This is his 11th #1 album, beating out Elvis for the most #1 albums by a solo artist...pretty amazing considering everyone had it before it was released due to it being leaked online. If you don't have it, go get it, it's a good look.
Getting Off That and moving On To The Next One (lol lame i know) the third single from the album is....going to officially hit the radio on October 5th but I'm sure it's already being played...check after the jump to see which song it is although i'm sure you already know unless, as stated before, you've been living under a rock

This Is It

I am a huge Michael Jackson fan and after seeing the Oprah piece today (yea i checked for her today lol)....let's just say he was such a human being. A mastermind. An entertainer. Did you see his dance skills? BANANAS! It's sad that a lot of people didn't truly appreciate him or his music until he was gone. Anywho, here's the trailer for the Michael Jackson: This Is It film.

Michael Jackson 'This Is It' movie trailer

Looks pretty good.

Whitney Houston: Million Dollar Bill

She looks good, no? Especially in that pink outfit...glad to see her back!

Highlights from the VMA's

A disgrace. Of course Bey's video was the hottest video up for nomination and sure she should have won, but that does not call for ignorance. Sometimes you just gotta sit back and shake your head at people like Kanye...even if what he said was completely true.

To be 43, Janet went in! Well done Miss Jackson!

Tribute to Breast Cancer

I was up listening to music when "This Woman's Work" by Maxwell came on. I love that song. Anyway, it reminded me of the tribute to breast cancer dance performed on So You Think You Can Dance. Amazing. Knowing someone who has gone through and survived breast cancer gives this dance so much more meaning. Check it out below:

Perfomed by Ade & Melissa

Sofisticado

Ralph Lauren went in at New York Fashion Week with its Spring 2010 line. Check it out and judge for yourself.
A lot more after the jump

Mary J.

Vocals were on point! Great job.

9/11 Benefit Concert

So yesterday(9/11), Jay-Z held a concert at Madison Square Garden. I love music but I never get that deep into rap, HOWEVER, Jay-Z is that dude when it comes to lyrical wordplay, metaphorical rhymes, and content with meaning. All things I listen for in rap. Getting back to the concert, unfortunately I couldn't be there nor could I watch it on tv...luckily I was able to watch it online! Let's just say...BANANAS! With special guests like John Mayer, Santigold, Kid Cudi, Pharrell, Swizz Beatz, Diddy,Kanye West, Mary J., and Beyonce...it was crazy. My personal favorite was Mary J. because she was seriously feeling herself...swag out of this world lol. Beyonce shut it down for the short time she was on stage. Kanye did his thing and suprisingly I wasn't annoyed by Rihanna during Run This Town. All in all it was amazing. For those who were not able to see it:

That was just part 1, you can see the rest of the videos after the jump...

For the SneakerHeads

Nike is set to release these Delta Force High's in October/November.
I like the two-tone, classic color scheme. Good Look.

Behind the Music: Lil' Wayne

In Rememberance of 9/11

God bless those who lost their lives on this tragic day and may He remain with their families, bringing them comfort, love, and peace of mind.
We Will Never Forget

I digg...

I have been watching Rihanna for a minute and every time I see her all I can say is...damn. For me she, is the definition of a female with style. She has her own look and rocks it well. Amber Rose is another bad chick, but that's a completely different conversation lol. Anyway check out Rihanna attending a couple of events:

Ladies, please do no try this at home if you do not have the swag to pull it off. This is not for the average female, you've got to be above par.
(By the way, those shades by Kerin Rose= $350)

Life Quote

Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness, that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, and fabulous? Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God. Your playing small doesn't serve the world. There's nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won't feel insecure around you. We are all meant to shine, as children do. We are born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us. It's not just in some of us, it's in everyone. And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.

~ Marianne Williamson

Very clean. Very Simple. Very elegant.

Miss Jackson If You're Nasty

Janet Jackson, who turned 43 in May, is on the cover of Harper's Bazaar. She looks BANANAS! In the magazine she discusses Michael's death and how it's hard for her to even watch tv because of all the nonsense and foolishness surrounding his death:
She has blocked herself off completely from the hysterical media coverage of his death — who did it, what did it. "It will drive you crazy," she says. "People can have rhinoceros skin, but there's a point when something's going to hurt you. Not everyone is stone, stone. I haven't watched the news in weeks. I had to ask my chef, How's Obama doing? I haven't read a newspaper. On top of that, [we've lost] a family member."
She's also working on a new album, which helps her through her difficult time. She touches on her personal life--she's not with J.D. anymore and she isn't dating, though she receives offers. It has also been confirmed that she will be performing on the VMA's this Sunday! Should be very good, as it's been rumored that she has been practicing for 15 hours a day. Can't wait! Check out the full interview over at Harper's Bazaar and a few more photos taken by Tom Munro.

President's Health Care Speech

For those of you that have not seen it, please watch it.

P.S. that was so immature of South Carolina Rep. Joe Wilson to yell "You lie" just because he disagreed with a statement the President made on illegal immigrants and health care. I don't even care that he apologized.

Hear This

Another collab from wayne and drake.
Darlin' Baby
The beat sounds a little off to me or maybe it's the style of flow...something is strange about it lol...but for the most part I like it. Check it out for yourself and enjoy!

Race Relations

I guess I'm in this "race" zone right now lol. Anyway, here are three very good movies about race relations...if you haven't seen them, definitely check them out!

Knowledge equals Growth and Power

You might not know who Tim Wise is, but you need to. He's one of the leading scholars on anti-racism and I got the opportunity yesterday(Wednesday), at my school, to hear him speak; he is serious. He speaks only the truth, which many people cannot handle. He discussed "Whiteness" and privilege, and how it is so easy to not acknowledge privileges as well as the disadvantages of others because "if we don't have to know, we won't know." For example, did you know that white people make up 67% of the population, but account for 70% of all drug users. It didn't shock me because I know that most drug users are those that are least expected to do so--those with money and privilege. However, society will lead you to believe that most drug users are people of color because we are "at the bottom of the totem pole." FAIL.

It scares me that we still allow such stereotypes to prolong even when we know the truth. RACISM still exists. Yes, even with a black President, racism still exists. Unbelievable right? When you think about it, not really. Mr. Wise made a great point during his speech where he discussed how sexism still exists in countries where women have been leaders, Presidents, and/or Prime Ministers. Just like the women in those countries, it seems as if we, people of color, still have to prove our worth of social equality, which is a right not an earned privilege. I'm working hard to realise--not realize--my dream, but I am still confronted with looks of shock followed by a "good for you" or a "wow that's good" when I say what University I go to and what my major is. Why is that? Why does shock come before praise for me but not for my white counterpart? Not that I need/want someone's praise...I'm proud enough of myself. But I hate feeling as if I have to work ten times harder just to be equal to someone that is just as human as me. How does that even sound right? It doesn't.

We have to address our own ignorance as a nation before we can move forward
. If we don't, we will always have an issue of disparity and social inequality.

There is so much more that I really want to say, but it's getting late and I have class at 8 in the morning lol. Google Tim Wise, he's amazing.

American Idol

Yes, I still watch this show and I know I'm not the only one.

Anyway, it has been announced and confirmed that Ellen DeGeneres will be replacing Paula Abdul as the fourth judge after auditions. Ellen announced it on Wednesday on her show and Fox has confirmed it.This picture makes me smile lol

I'm curious to see how she will fit in with the rest of the judges. Obviously she has no background knowledge in singing so her judgments will probably be more like the home viewer opinion with little to no technical help. Either way, I'm excited to see how this goes!

"Imagination is more important than knowledge. Knowledge is limited. Imagination encircles the world."

- Albert Einstein

Dear Mr. President,

Please make some sort of public announcement outlining and explaining the details of your Health Care Proposal. Apparently some people cannot look up the information on their own; they would rather listen to hearsay. It's really sad how misinformed so many people are. Maybe you can do another 30 minute commercial or a very straightforward speech, but not another town hall meeting--they are almost pointless now. Other than that, keep up the good work!

Sincerely,
Jerz

The Blueprint 3

Minus one or two songs that are just blah, this is a very nice CD. Not bananas, but good nonetheless. Some of my favorite tracks in Empire State of Mind(featuring A. Keys), On to the Next One(produced by Swizz Beats), Reminder, A Star is Born, So Ambitious(featuring Pharrell and of course Run This Town...I like the majority of the record...those 6 songs just stand out the most to me. Though it has already leaked in its entirety Make sure you BUY the cd when it hits stores September 11th! Until then you can listen to the entire CD over at MTV...click here!

It's That Dirty Money

Check out the first two singles from Diddy's new group Dirty Money (Dawn Richard, Diddy, and Kalenna). Love Come Down
(BA-NAN-AS)

Angels

They will both appear on the upcoming "Last Train to Paris" album. I'm definitely feeling the different sounds each of these tracks brings--Love Come Down is my favorite of the two. I still gotta hear more though before I buy my ticket!
